Shirasagi no mai (dance of the white heron) - 白鷺の舞
This traditional dance takes place at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa.
Celebrated more than 1000 years ago, it once made it possible to fight against the plague as well as all other natural disasters.
Today it is a ritual parade for peace, good harvests and to fight against evil. The dance of the white heron has become a traditional performance in the neighborhood.
The parade is made up of 3 warriors, a stick bearer, a healer specializing in birds, a parasol bearer, 8 white herons, 19 musicians and a nurse.
The white heron is the largest of all herons. Its image is found in Japanese culture, such as Himeji Castle, also known as Shirasagi-jo "White Heron Castle".
