Ginkgo is a tree native to Asia that appeared in Japan around 1000 years ago. Today this tree is part of the Japanese landscape, especially in autumn alongside the Japanese maple (momiji). It is very common in shrines.

The Hôryô ginkgo planted nearly 1,100 years ago, and declared a natural monument in 1926, is 31 meters high and about 13 meters wide.

The leaf of the ginkgo has a particular shape, and takes on a golden yellow color during the fall.
The tree also gives nuts which are edible, eaten roasted their taste is similar to that of corn.

The ginkgo is a symbol of longevity, in medicine it is known to prolong life. Research shows its interest in age-related problems, such as cognitive problems (memory, Alzheimer's disease, etc.). It would also intervene for the improvement of blood circulation.

The leaf of the ginkgo is also used in sumo, represented by the bun that is made for high-ranking wrestlers (ôichô-mage).
