Akebi - ア ケ ビ

The akebi is an autumn fruit, purple-purplish in color which grows in northern Japan. It grows on some kind of vine and looks like an exotic fruit. Its flowers have a smell of chocolate which has earned it the nickname "chocolate vine".

This fruit is only available two weeks a year during the fall. 93% of the fruit comes from Yamagata prefecture.

When the fruit is ripe, it opens to reveal its dark brown seeds, and white lychee-like flesh.

It can be cooked like a vegetable because it is quite bitter but slightly sweet. It can also be prepared as a drink or smoothie, or as a jelly and jam. Even the outer rind of the fruit is edible.
